Rosalee Valent-Torres Cohen, Born in Brownsville March 27, 1940, died there on Nov. 23, 2017. Her father Antonio Treviño Torres was from the pioneer family of the Treviños who came with the Escandon Expedition of 1749. Her mother Beatrice Valent Torres, was the daughter of Antonio Valent, the fishing Pioneer in the early 1900's. Both parents are deceased.

Rosalee held a joint BA in English and Spanish from UT-Austin. She taught English at Faulk Jr. High from 1962-1967,

In 1964 she converted to Judaism, three years before she married Barry Cohen on July 30, 1967, but always respecting the Roman Catholicism of her parents.

She was also proud of her year teaching in Murfreesboro, N.C., 1969-1970, where she and one other Caucasian teacher were the integration of a former all-Negro school. Her Black-wall-of-pride attracted teachers and students from the entire Chowan County, as did her African themed play.

In 1987 she received an MS in Library Science from the University of North Texas-Denton. From 1989-2005 she served as U.S. Courts Librarian.

Her funeral will be graveside, conducted by Cantor Henry Greenspan at 10 am. Tuesday, November 28th at the Hebrew Cemetery with a Shiva Service at the Spanish Meadows Assisted Living Center at 1 pm. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Dear Barry,
We were very sorry to have read the Sabbath paper today, informing us with the passing of Rosalee. We know she was dearest to your heart as you were to hers... and all who have known you as a couple. Be of good courage my friend and stand firm in your faith, for God now has a special place for her in His realm of eternity! As for you and me? Let us maintain our strength and hope that we, too, will some day rejoin Rosalee in the New Kingdom of Heaven and earth! Let GOD always be between you and me forever....
Our condolences — James, Lillian, and Victoria Seguin

We are saddened to learn of Rosalee’s passing. She was a good woman: strong, kind and generous. The world is a smaller place with her not in it. Please let us know if there is anything you need, Barry.
