Elva Garza Obituary

Our beloved mother Elva O. Garza went to be with the Lord on January 31, 2022, at home surrounded by her children.

She was born on May 17, 1931, in Brownsville, Texas to Eduvijes Perez and Angel Olguin.

Mom was the matriarch of the Garzitas and was a special lady in so many different ways. She loved her family and there are so many of us. She did her best to show us the true meaning of love and embed God into our lives. She taught us how to love unconditionally, respect everyone, be compassionate, the importance of forgiveness, find humor even in the midst of sadness and live life to its fullest. She lived an amazing life. She loved to sew, paint and listen to music. She especially loved to hear our dad play his guitar while he sang her favorite songs.

She loved to take her grandchildren on adventures to different places, stopped at all the little towns and got lost on purpose. Mom loved to think about the numerous ways she could scare us and when she did, she would laugh uncontrollably. Love and laughter were the staple in our home. Mom was our prayer warrior, and we knew her prayers would protect us.

We will all miss her smile, her laughter and her comforting touch. We will never forget her whistle which could be heard from wherever we were outside.

Mom was a devoted mother of seven girls and one son, 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Everyone says they have a great mom, but we knew we had a great Mom because everyone told us so.

Mom leaves behind a legacy that will soon not be forgotten. We are glad she has been reunited with the love of her life, our dad.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Benito R, Garza; her parents and sister Mirtala Wofford.

She will forever live in the hearts of her children, Diana Vasquez (Gilbert), Nilda Garza Perez, Belinda Childs (Gary ), Norma Leticia "Lettie" Mendez, Cecilia "Ceci" Garza (Frank), Ana Alexander (Jim), Benito "Benny" Garza (Isabel), Susana "Susie" Sierra (Troy), her brothers and sisters, sister-in-law, all her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

We are so thankful to our sister Lettie for selflessly devoting her life to being our mom’s companion and caregiver. Lettie words alone cannot express the gratitude we have for everything you have done for our mom.

On behalf of the family we would like to thank Dr. Jesus R. Ortiz and staff, Our Caring Hands Hospice & Palliative Care, Christian Quality Home Healthcare, and Rosie for your kindness and compassion shown to our mother.

The family will receive visitors starting at 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022, and the funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home, 1025 E. Jackson St, Brownsville, Texas.
