Guadalupe C. De La Garza of Brownsville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, at her residence.
Mom had several roles in her life, laborer, wife, counselor, and teacher, but above all else, she was a mother. With her strong work ethic and balanced fairness in her daily dealings with friends and family, she was always ready for a visit with a cup of coffee and wisdom to give.
She was born in La Feria, Texas, August 7, 1933, to Herlinda Conde de Patlan, and Jose Isacc Cantu.
She was raised in Matamoros with her grandmother, Maria Antonieta, at Soto La Marina, then moved to El Rancho de Brazil. The youngest of two young girls, the loss of her 1 yr old brother, David, only hastened her goals to have a better life and "escaped" to Brownsville following her big sister, Victoria. Even though they were U.S. Citizens, their first duty was to family and backbreaking work at the Ranch. They did as they were told.
She rode horses bareback with her trusty rifle at her side. She enjoyed singing and despite never having any schooling, she understood English, and was a math whiz.
Left to cherish her memory are her nine children, Juana Imdelda Keeler, Desiderio De La Garza(Rachel), Abundio De La Garza, Jr.(Mary), Rosalinda Nava (Mariano), Frankie De La Garza(Lucy), Joseph De La Garza(Dora), Maria G. Oyler (Ron), Flor Estella Saiz (German), and Mimi Sierra (Jaime); her grandchildren, Jessica Castillo, Joseph De La Garza,Jr., Crystal Keeler, Jeremy Osborne Keeler, Alex Keeler, Brenda Lee Jasso, Nancy Rae De La Garza, Laura Andrea Quintanilla, Claudia Alyssa De La Garza, Mario German Saiz, and Gustavo Enrique Saiz; great-grandchildren, Brielle and Madeline Jasso, Nicholas and Lily Isabella Cardenas, and Jett Keeler.
