Gustavo A. Aguilar Sr.

Gustavo Alfredo Aguilar, Sr., passed away on January 3, 2022, in Brownsville.
Alfredo was born on December 6, 1938, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamps, Mx., to Alfredo and Blanca C. Aguilar.
As a youth, he moved to Matamoros, Tamps, where he met the love of his life, Bertha Parra, on a trip to Brownsville. They married on September 14, 1961. Early in their marriage, they worked side by side in his father-in-law's grocery store Parra Brother’s. Later on, he became an insurance salesman for various companies.
In 1974 his dream came true as he opened his business G & A Grocery Store, which grew to include a coffee shop and laundry mat. In later years he closed his other endeavors. He concentrated on his restaurant that became a downtown favorite G & A Mexican Food, an actual family-run and family-oriented café until his retirement.
During this time, Alfredo and Bertha had raised three sons who installed their work ethic and love for people.
Alfredo was an athlete as a young man and a sport’s fan all his life. His knowledge of boxing and boxing history was second to none. He will be remembered as a husband, father, and friend to all.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bertha P. Aguilar; three sons Gustavo A. (Gaylen) Aguilar, Jr., Gilberto A. (Erika) Aguilar, Sr., and Gaston A. (Norma) Aguilar; three grandchildren, Aide Ochoa, Gilbert Aguilar, Jr., Gabriel Aguilar, and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Sunday, January 9, 2022. Chapel service will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 10, 2022, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home. Committal service will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
