Jose Enrique Peña, 41, of Brownsville, passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.
He worked as an elementary school educator since 2001. His journey began with Brownsville ISD as a substitute teacher and continued when he later became a paraprofessional, computer lab teacher, and assistant coach. In 2010, he graduated from UTB/TSC and received his bachelor's degree in bilingual education. After college, his first position was as a fifth-grade bilingual/dual language teacher specializing in math and science at Raul Yzaguirre School for Success beginning in 2011. He returned to BISD in 2014, where he worked as a fifth-grade Science teacher while also assisting other grade levels. He later became a certified art teacher and worked in that position from January 2020 to September 2021.
Mr. Peña is preceded in death by his grandfather, Raul Flores; an uncle, Domingo Enrique Peña; and maternal grandparents, Refugio and Gumecinda Meza.
He is survived by his loving wife, Yesenia Peña; two sons, Jarian Amadeo Peña, and Jose Enrique Peña, Jr.; parents, Irma and Jose A. Peña Jr. ; a brother, Hector Adrian Peña; and grandmother, Maria De La Luz Peña.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM with a rosary at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Committal will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
