Julia (Garcia) Vela

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Julia Garcia Vela, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she was a part of, on August 5, 2020.

Born in Los Fresnos, TX, on December 14, 1926, she witnessed incredible changes to her world in her 93 years of life. She married her loving husband, Jose, in 1947 and happily raised five children in Brownsville, TX. Julia lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker, grandmother, and employee at Levi Strauss.

She loved to cook, kept an immaculate house, was highly skilled at putting together puzzles and enjoyed playing Loteria every chance she got. Her personality was easygoing, and it was always a pleasure to be in her company as she always celebrated your accomplishments and never mentioned your mistakes. She will be missed more than can be expressed and will be in our hearts always.

She is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, two brothers, devoted husband, Jose Vela; her children, Flor Estela Vela, Jose Vela, Jr., and Maria Margarita Najera; and her grandchildren, Jesus Najera and Mary Grace Vela.

She is survived by her children, Jorge Vela, Javier Vela, and Paula Rodriguez; son-in-law, Eusebio Rodriguez, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Blanca Vela; 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon with a Holy Rosary at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. A celebration of Julia’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at Holy Family Catholic Church.
