Lydia Manzano Besteiro, 94, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September
23, 2024, after battling dementia for 9 years. Lydia was born June 18, 1930, in
Brownsville and lived in Hargill, TX. She was the daughter of Ernesto and Maria
Luisa Solitaire Manzano and the oldest of five sisters.
Lydia graduated from Edinburg High School. After high school, Lydia moved to
Brownsville and attended R & D School of Business on 1204 ½ E. Washington above
Gonzalez Pharmacy. Lydia worked at Central Motors on Levee St. and later at
Delta Funeral Home where she met her future husband Raul Leal Besteiro. They
were married on July 14, 1957.
In 1968, Lydia graduated from Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Services in
Houston as a Funeral Director and Mortician. Together, they owned Garza Funeral
Home now known as Garza Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville.
Our mom's passion was going to Las Vegas with our dad, and getting on the John
Deere tractor to prepare the field to plant watermelon seeds, corn, and other
vegetables. People passing by the house would also see her on the riding
lawnmower and using the weed-eater.
Lydia was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Raul, her parents, her
grandson, Jonathan Elvis Guajardo, and her four sisters, Oralia M. Guzman, Delia
M. Phillips, Violeta M. Carrasco, and Judy Manzano. The Golden Girls (as they
called themselves) plus 1 are together again.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Diana B. (Rogelio) Guajardo from Brownsville, and
Rosemarie (David) Davila from Kingwood, and a nephew she helped raise, Eric
Christopher (Karina Garza) Manzano from Brownsville. Three grandchildren
Claudette Marie Guajardo, Brandon David Davila and Brian Andrew Davila. A
great- granddaughter, Haley Marie Guajardo, and a great niece Erykah Judith
Manzano, and other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 29, 2024. from 3:00 - 7:00 pm followed by a
Rosary at 7:00 pm at Garza Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday September 30, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Cathedral with interment
at Buena Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rogelio Guajardo, David Davila, Richard Guzman, Eric
Manzano, Brandon Davila, Brian Davila and Robert Carrasco.
