Mary Ponce Obituary

Mary Lou Ponce, 63, passed away Monday, December 20, 2021, at Valley Regional Medical Center.
She was a native and life-long resident of Brownsville.
Her parents, Eduardo D. and Amelia P. Hernandez, preceded her in death.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 28 years, Oscar Ponce; three children, Vanessa Amelia Sandoval, Joel Adrian Ponce, and Dr. Aliza Victoria Ponce. Her siblings include: Roberto (Oralia Rosales) Hernández, Leticia (Frank) Galindo, Eduardo (Isabel Benavidez) Hernández, Jr., Alicia (David Aguirre ) Hernández, and Graciela (José Ángel) Serrata.
Mary Lou loved and was loved by her family and many friends. She is a former member of the Southern Tip Jaycees and volunteered in many community projects in her younger years. She was a current member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, serving as Secretary. Mary Lou graduated with a Bachelors's Degree in Law Enforcement from Pan American University, Brownsville, and a Master's Degree in Education from Texas A&M, Corpus Christi. Her long career includes working at the Texas Department of Human Services as a caseworker, the Cameron County Sheriff's Office as an investigator, Cameron County Adult Probation Office, as a Probation Officer, and a teacher at BISD James Pace High School-Law Enforcement Magnet School. For over 18 years, she helped students develop their interests in law and the legal profession. Outside of the classroom, she was also a notary public and representative of Primerica Financial Services.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Lord of Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Committal will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joel Adrian Ponce, Oscar Ponce, Roberto Hernández, Eduardo Hernández, Jr., Luis Arturo Ponce, and José Ángel Serrata. Honorary Pallbearer will be Frank Galindo.
