Raul "Rilo" Esequiel Rodriguez Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 1, 2024, in San Antonio, TX. Born to Severa G. Rodriguez on January 28, 1966, Raul was a true Brownsville native through and through, his life and legacy deeply interwoven with the community he loved and served.
Raul's early years were spent in Brownsville, where he attended Canales Elementary School and Land O' Lakes Middle School. A 1984 graduate of Porter High School, he carried his passion for camaraderie and community service to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office, where he began his career in 1987.
In his tenure with the Cameron County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Rodriguez held the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant with multiple service awards and two Purple Hearts. Professionally, Raul started his career in public service as a Detention Officer in October 1987; by 1993, he was asked to serve as a Sheriff Deputy, where he served with distinction and was promoted to Corporal in 1997. Raul earned the reputation of being an officer who was there when called upon and who always acted above and beyond the call of duty. Lieutenant Rodriguez dedicated his life to law enforcement and, in the scope of his daily duties as an officer, like other officers, placed his life in danger for the safety and well-being of the citizens and visitors of Cameron County.
Throughout his career, Raul was awarded his first Purple Heart in recognition of his actions and wounds the night of Christmas Eve in 1994, when he was run over by a drunk driver while directing traffic. Raul earned his second Purple Heart in recognition of his persistent actions and wounds received in the early morning of July 7, 1997. He responded to a call for assistance, found himself under ambush, and was shot. Without regard to the injuries he sustained and with total disregard for his safety, he continued to return fire, which led to the apprehension of the armed criminal. Raul continued his career in San Antonio as a police officer for South San Antonio Independent School District. He enjoyed the change of pace from patrol to school detail. He established a foundation of trust and rapport with students to create a conducive environment for violence prevention within the schools. He made a lifelong impact on students, from pursuing a career in public service to changing their lifestyle. Raul later medically resigned from South San ISD in June of 2021.
Raul was preceded in death by his mother, Severa G. Rodriguez, and granddaughter, Ellena Rose Martin. Raul's legacy is carried on by his three adored children, their spouses, and grandchildren: Amanda Jo, and her husband, Narciso Hernandez, Stephanie Marie, her husband, Eduardo Martin, and their daughter Ella Rose and future son to be born October of this year, and Raul Esequiel Jr "RJ," his wife, Christina Rodriguez, and their two children, Ryan, and Valerie.
Each of them will remember their father, and grandfather, "Grandpa Blue," for his contagious laugh, charismatic energy, and dad jokes. Raul enjoyed fishing and watching WWE Wrestling, the Dallas Mavericks, the Houston Astros, and the Dallas Cowboys. His home was filled with Dallas Cowboy and Police memorabilia- each piece placed with precision and care. Raul's spirit of community extended beyond his family. He enjoyed his time as a little league coach for his son's baseball teams and was always ready to umpire a game. For a time, he also played on a Brownsville Men's softball team- Team Dirty. Lieutenant Raul Esequiel Rodriguez's story is of dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed, but the seeds he planted in the hearts of those who knew him will continue to grow and flourish for generations to come.
A Chapel Service and Police Ceremony to celebrate Raul's life will be held on June 7, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Garza Memorial Funeral Home, 1025 E. Jackson St., Brownsville, TX. Following the Service, Raul will be cremated and laid to rest in a private family location.
