Thomas Kelley, 83, of Brownsville, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Nadia's House in Brownsville.
Thomas Matthew Kelley was born in Houston, Texas, on July 14, 1942, and Iived one precocious and adventuresome life. As a nature and strong-willed child, he loved discovering nature's mysteries and surprises, and caring for animals,
especially cats, despite his mother's concerns. He shared stories of hopping on trains to see where they'd take him, until realizing that he had no other plans, and somehow found the train to get himself home again.
After graduating high school, he joined the Air Force, where he served from July of 1962 to February of 1970, serving his country at home and abroad. He then sought higher education in the sciences, analyzing and categorizing, teaching, and graduating from The University of Texas with his Master's Degree in Science.
He claimed that, after presenting his proposal for a doctorate dissertation, he
walked away and didn't look back after butting heads with his higherups. He had a knack for learning languages and all about animals and habitats, geology and the elements, astronomy and the cosmos.
Intelligent and knowledgeable and passionately opinionated, he lived life his way.
For most of the last 30 years, he lived on his beloved S. Padre Island, loving the Island life, partying with friends and solving the world's problems at local bars; while at home, reading, watching comedies and nature shows, and too much
news, listening to music, and playing his bass, he did this until he couldn't.
He is survived by his niece, Cindy Thornby of Conroe, and numerous other relatives.
