Zoila Vela, 97, of Brownsville, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021, at her residence in Brownsville.
Zoila was born in Brownsville, TX, to Ygnacio Vela and Angela Robles-Vela on August 24, 1924. She went to school at Brownsville Jr High then graduated from BISD-Adult Continuing Education in 1979. She worked as a seamstress for many years. Zoila was a member of Iglesia Cristiana Bella Vista, where she volunteered as Church Treasurer for more than 40 years. She received a three-year seminary diploma from Instituto Biblico Hispano-San Benito.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Ygnacio Vela and Angela Robles-Vela; Siblings: Salvador (Lucila) Vela, Sara Muñiz, Simona Roca, Samuel (Angelita) Vela, Ignacio Vela Jr. , Sofia Saenz, Angelita (Abdon) De La Fuente, Saul (Mary Lou) Vela.
Zoila Vela is survived by 26 surviving nieces and nephews, numerous great-nieces and nephews; three brothers-in-law, Francisco Saenz, Ricardo Roca, Jesus Muniz, and a sister-in-law, Rosa Vela.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM with an evening service at 07:00 PM Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home.
Chapel service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home. Committal will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be Salvador Vela, Samuel Vela, Eric Vela, John Vela, Gilbert Cantu, and Marco Varela.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gael González, Reggie Clark, Gilly Cantu, Jojo Bravo, Isaiah Rhines, and Ryan Cantu.
In place of flowers, you may honor Zoila with a contribution or donation to her beloved church, Iglesia Cristiana Bella Vista.
